I finally got my author copies of The Four Keys!! It’s quite something to hold a physical copy of this book after so long! Squeee!!!!
I know it’s been awhile since I’ve done a regular blog post here, but given what’s going on in the world right now, it’s been hard to update things. I suppose I’ve gotten to the point in quarantine where I’m accepting it until there’s some sort of treatment or vaccine. With cases on the rise again here in Switzerland, and people being careless about masking and social distancing, I am not going out any time soon unless I absolutely have to!
But even with all of the world’s mess, I seem to have found my writing mojo in the last month or so, and that has been really awesome. I suppose that if I can’t travel places, I can go places in my head, right?
Unity is coming along, and I have about two thirds written. This last part has been harder, as there’s more political intrigue, and I’ve had to do a little more research and a little more planning and thinking about how the plot will play out.
I’ve finally released The Four Keys to ebook, and I’m stoked that it’s finally out! It’s available through Amazon. (Although, if you don’t do Kindle, let me know, and I’ll sort you out.) The Wife did amazing cover art for the book, and eventually, we’ll be publishing an illustrated paper version with more of The Wife’s art in it! (That won’t be out for a while since the art will take a bit of time to do.)
I also put up a new Star Trek FanFic on AO3 called The Vulcan Harp. We’ve been watching Star Trek in chronological order with the German language audio (how else would a geek practice listening in German?), and I’ve been really amazed to see just how well the Discovery writers dug into canon. If you also want to watch it in chronological order, here’s a good list on how. It’s amazing how much more depth you get with Spock particularly, and the universe in general, when you watch it this way.
So, naturally, I wrote FanFic, as a geeky writer would, right? Keep an eye out for more FanFic, since I find doing FanFic breaks me out of writing slumps. 🙂
I am also doing NaNoWriMo this year, and hopefully that push will help me finish Unity! If you’re also doing NaNo, feel free to friend me on the NaNo site!
Stay safe everyone, and wear your masks. And if you’re in the US, please please vote on November 3!
Unity – Military/hard sci-fi/spy novel set in a future where humans have colonized several other planets. One of the main characters is a Religious Program Specialist and Senior Communications officer who has PTSD and works with the station’s Chaplain to figure out why the colonization survey they’re supporting isn’t going according to plan, and realizing that who’s behind it is more dangerous than just a failed colony.
Word count as of today: still 108,232 (not including the chapter I’m currently working on.)
Started a project on my inkle loom with one of my handspun bamboo yarns that I spun from fiber from The Fiber Lady. The colorway is called Chocolate Cherries, and it’s a mix of purple, pink, and a chocolate brown. This came about because I managed to get inserts for my Apple Watch so that I can use Nato bands for instead of the regular watch bands. And I was like, hey! I could weave my own! So I am!
I’m still working on an altar rug for our large altar, but that’s been a bit on hold for now. I’m also going to go back to spinning soon, especially since I just received some beautiful fiber from Mosshollow Hill in CA!
My newest fountain pens have been a TWSBI Classic Fountain Pen in Burgundy, and a Sailor LeCoule in Rose Quartz. You really can’t go wrong with Japanese pens. They just work. (Not that I don’t like my European pens, but still…)
I’ve been starting to make all the winter foods now. Made my first beer beef stew of the season about a week ago, and it was awesome. The other thing is that I’ve discovered mashed cauliflower, and OMG! Here we’re thinking we can’t have any potato recipes ever again, and along comes mashed cauliflower (and romanesco, that fractal one). I made a shepherd’s pie with mashed romanesco the other night, and it was glorious!
I’ve also been LOVING my new 8L Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Air Fryer (#notsponsored). Holy crap, I love this thing! Who knew that chicken nuggets and fish sticks can be crispy? Or that you can cook a roast in the air fryer and not make your kitchen into a sauna? And, seriously, air fried brussel sprouts, man! Super yummy! This Instant Pot also does sous vide, so it’s been nice being able to make sous vide stuff again (mmmmm….sous vide steaks!). 20/10 would recommend!
I am super excited to announce that The Four Keys is finally available for you all to read! For now, it is available electronically via Amazon (see link below), although, if would rather not read through Amazon, feel free to contact me to buy PDF version.
Also, feel free to comment here or contact me if you have any questions about the book! It’s available on all Amazon sites for 2.99 USD (or Euro equivalent). Also, if you can, please leave a review!
Also, super awesome thanks to The Wife for this amazing cover art!
It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally got to the final stages of self-publishing The Four Keys, my mystic novella. I’ve been working on this story off and on for nearly 5 years. (Can you believe it?)
It will be available starting October 1 digitally, primarily via Amazon, but I hope to have other digital versions available as well. More information will be available closer to the end of September.
I has an excite!!
Sometimes you make a plan, and The Universe just laughs and sets fire to said plan. Yeah, it’s been like that since I last posted. I am taking care of things and adulting around a bunch of stuff, so, at least at the moment, things are on even keel.
I tell you, folks, Depression is a bastard liar who is NOT your friend. But thanks to a very perceptive Wife, a good network of friends who know good care providers, I’m giving this bastard Depression the middle finger. (Or at least telling it quietly to fuck off and asking it to please will you just let me write?)
I’m getting back to writing after a couple of weeks dealing with a Depression hit. (I suppose you could call it a relapsing/remitting depression?) It’s hard, but I try and be happy for small victories. Like: Yay! I wrote 4 paragraphs (or for an hour, etc). Yay! I made a call! Yay! I actually went out today! Yay! I got up, took a shower, and made breakfast! Yay! I did my German homework!
One day at a time and little victories, right?

Not mine, but my friend Sydney’s from Nerd Coffee:
Still in A1, but still doing well. Finished watching Enterprise in German, and are now watching the movies for a bit of a break. After that we’ll probably watch either Voyager or Discovery in German.
Still finding confidence hard with my spoken German, but I seem to be understanding better. Also, it seems if I tell folks I’m learning, or trying to remember vocabulary, they are more than willing to just keep talking to me in German (and usually slower).
Yes, I’m still around. I’ve just been neglectful of this poor blog because, well, I’ve been writing.
I had an epiphany about a month or so ago, and I wasn’t giving my writing the proper priority in my life. I was treating my writing as a hobby, but if I wanted to get somewhere with it, I needed to start treating it as my job. Something clicked for me about this shift in priority, and now I’m five chapters into a novel that is just, well….getting written!
Go figure, right?
It’s been awesome, and I’m loving it, but today I really had to re-think my projects and scheduling. In the end, and with help from the Wife, I decided to switch to a monthly service schedule for Between the Worlds Church. This will start in June, and more information will be posted on the church website.
But, as far as this site goes, I’ll be updating kind of randomly about my progress, travel, and other things. You can sign up via email here, or follow me on Twitter and Facebook to keep updated.
All the Projects!

Nothing really happening with fiber stuff because writing.
We’re about halfway through our A1 coursebook at this point, and finally starting to learn Dativ and Past Perfect tense. Makes a huge difference. We’re also still watching Star Trek TOS with the German dub for listening practice, and I believe we will moving on to Enterprise next (or maybe re-watching Discovery).
So, this year I’m working on getting my writing mojo back, and I’m doing pretty good so far. Not only have I finished my mystic novella (woot!) I’ve also written a short Star Trek fanfic. The Wife and I have been watching The Next Generation from the beginning with the German dub track and English subtitles for listening and vocabulary practice, and well, I got inspired.

A young ensign invokes a deity into the holodeck and she gets a little more than she bargains for.
“So, now that I’ve made all these tools, what do you want of me?” I asked.
“Well, you use them, of course!” She said.
“But I’m not sure how, and for what purpose!”
She sighed. “I suppose it’s only fair to tell you since we had you write the journey in the first place. Ok, here you go:
The Stone is for looking at the past, storing, and remembering.
The Knife is for the work of magick, as you already know.
The Dark Mirror is for scrying and to help when dealing with the dead.
The Water Bowl is for everyday guidance and purification.
I’d recommend the Water Bowl for daily meditation. And your usual offering of candles and incense. Do prayers in the evening and meditation in the morning.”
I nodded. It all made sense. Now I had a direction…
She shook her head. “It really does take a spiritual 2×4 sometimes, eh?”
“Yeah, well…there’s a lot of stuff going on…” I said sheepishly.
She smiled. Her eyes held nothing but love and kindness. I smiled back.
The Descent by Mage of Machines is an approximately one hour meditation journey to the Underworld and the Isle of Apples under the protection of Inanna to commune with the Beloved Dead. The music was written, composed, and performed by Sarah Thompson, also known as Mage of Machines. You’ll recognize a little bit of this album as the show intro and exit music for This Week In Heresy.
Some of you, if you had attended Pantheacon in 2013, will also recognize this music. The Circle of Cerridwen, with friends, performed The Descent in a live dramatization and dance with an early edition of the music. The final edition of the album was released on Samhain 2013.
Sarah Thompson is your Guide. Inanna is voiced by Calyxa Omphalos, and Rev. Gina is the voice of Ereshkigal. The script was written by Rev. Gina and Sarah Thompson.
This is offered as a Samhain blessing for you, as a gift to the community, and to honor the Beloved Dead.
The album version of The Descent is available via iTunes. If you are looking to purchase it through other platforms, click here.
“No, no…pleases don’t fall asleep! I’d like to have this conversation.” He said, as I was typing in my bed. I was tempted to nap right then, but I did want to write. I turned on my Hated Bands playlist and invited Him to have a seat.
He laughed. “It’s easy for people to hate what they don’t understand, isn’t it?”
I nodded. “Definitely. Or to think someone is evil because they like something you don’t.”
He gave me that look.
“Okay, Okay! Guilty. But, seriously, how can people like Trump and say they believe in You? How can they say they believe in You, when they are generally being discriminatory, racist, white supremacist, homophobic, transphobic and more? I mean, people really believe that they need to take up weapons to fight these things in Your name!”
He grinned, but His eyes were sad.
“My words have become Rome. They are not what I taught then, but I can’t help what My words and My actions became. Humanity has used what I’ve taught for their own ends. There is only so much I can do as an Ancestor and Deity. You all have to own your own mistakes and find the compassion to forgive them…eventually. Humans are good at torturing themselves and hurting themselves. You should know that by now.”
I nodded. “Yes, we tend to do ourselves in quite handily.”
We sat in silence for a bit.
“There is hope, though.” he said.
“Oh yes! It’s in your art and film. There are stories of humanity’s great awakening by more than one author. There is, somewhere in the human psyche, a need to believe that some day we’ll move past our hatred and violence, or at least make it so that the violence and oppression are unacceptable and that learning, art, music, compassion, love are normal instead of the exception.”
I nodded. Yes, we have a lot of that, and a lot of the art I consume is of that. “But we’re far from that place,” I said.
“Yes, that’s true. It’s like any wound: you have to go through a lot of pain and discomfort until it goes away. The unfortunate thing is that you were born in the middle of the pain, so it seems like things will never get better.”
“Really? You mean it will get better?”
He smiled sadly. “Eventually.”
That didn’t really inspire hope, but I have always had at least a little in my heart.
“That’s the spirit!” He said, as he stood up to leave. “I have hope that you will continue to spread the teachings of love and hope. It doesn’t even have to be in My name. I’ll tell you a secret: My hope was always to make people see others as human beings, to see themselves in others. It was never any more than that, really. The religion isn’t important, but that is.”
He left the room while “Sympathy for the Devil” was playing…
